Somehow I am feeling very optimistic today.
I think this compromise is a huge victory.
You heard me. Not a small victory. Not a defeat. A HUGE victory.
Remember, partisanship is a means to an end. The end is the life and liberty of millions of people who live in this country. This is bigger than three or seven judges and it's even bigger than the rules of the Senate. The spirit last night in the press conference and the spirit this morning on the floor of the Senate is... gasp!... cameraderie. Senators are saying that this compromise lays the groundwork for future compromises and civil debate on legislation. That means getting bills through that feed hungry families and give people jobs who need them and pay for the health care of those who can't do it themselves.
It sucks to quantify political priorities. But you have to think: for every bad decision one of these judges makes, how many people will be aided by legislation that wouldn't have made it through if the Senate were shut down?
And let's think about the public. How much confidence has been restored in the Senate now? For every political wonk on the blogs, how many people out there simply see the word "compromise" and think "thank God a bunch of ADULTS are in there." The people who came off worst in this? Bill Frist and George W. Bush. COMPROMISE is the word of the day and if you weren't a part of it, you're a divider, not a uniter.
So call me an apologist or a centrist. Truth is, I'm just interested in seeing people live good lives. And it's much easier to do that when you have grown-ups in charge.

I am inclined to agree with you on this one, Witch.
I'm rather intrigued, as well, by the rumor that part of the agreement entailed a judicial nominee being voted down. Every blog that's mentioned it has credited "an anonymous hill staffer" as the source, so I can't be sure of its authenticity entirely. However, if it does happen that way, it's going to raise the profile of the Senate, in my opinion. (and, perhaps, lower Dubya's to a more appropriate level)
